ABOUT THE ARTIST

For more than three decades, Mark Robert Halper has built a career around photographing people and the things that give their lives meaning.

His earlier work took him from national magazines and advertising campaigns to portraits of some of the most recognized figures in business, entertainment, architecture, and culture, including Bill Gates, Frank Gehry, Sherry Lansing, Don Cheadle, Lauren Hutton, Gene Simmons, William Friedkin, and Erin Brockovich. He later devoted nearly two decades to commissioned family portraiture through Halper Fine Art.

Today, Mark’s focus is ARTIFACTS, a body of photographic work born from a simple idea: the objects we keep can become portals to the people, relationships, and experiences we carry with us.

The project began during the isolation of 2020, when Mark turned his camera toward the small objects and childhood toys around his home. What began as an exercise in seeing familiar things differently gradually became an exploration of memory itself: the worlds we inhabited as children, the people we have loved and lost, and the relationships that continue to shape us.

Using a process he calls Refractive Alchemy, Mark creates the photographs optically and in camera, transforming real physical artifacts through light, focus, and refraction. The resulting photographs are less concerned with documenting how an object looks than with revealing the life, memory, and imagination it can contain.

“As children, we see the life in our toys, our stuffed animals, and our play. As we grow older, they become objects. I still see the life.”

Mark now creates commissioned ARTIFACTS for people who want to make something from their own history present again. The process begins not with an object, but with a memory. Together, Mark and the person he is creating for discover the artifact that can become the doorway to it.
